PetStep II Multi-Purpose Pet Loading Ramp
HOW WE UNKNOWINGLY CONTRIBUTE TO OUR PETS' INJURIES
By allowing our dogs to jump down from high places, we encourage injuries. Dogs were never meant to jump down from SUVs and pickups. Imagine what would happen to us if we consistently were forced to jump down from our kitchen table or desk.

A runner or jogger would never begin their run without proper warm up exercises! This is exactly what we ask our furry friends to do each and every time we ask them to jump from a tailgate. They will do anything we ask of them because they love and trust us without reservation. Imagine that they have been in your vehicle for an extended time; we open the hatch or gate and command them to jump! Their muscles are cold and stiff. Making that leap could cause severe trauma and damage. THESE LOVING ANIMALS WERE NOT BORN WITH ARTHRITIS OR DYSPLASIA! WE MUST GIVE THEM EVERY CHANCE FOR COMFORT THAT WE CAN. PLEASE START YOUR PUPPY ON A RAMP AND NEVER ALLOW THEM TO JUMP WHEN THEIR MUSCLES ARE NOT FULLY WARMED UP.

In addition to the PetStep II Ramp for your vehicle, we are also glad to offer the HalfStep II for your use at home - if they need help into the car, they probably need help getting onto your bed or couch.

We also offer the Ruff Rider™ Roadie Vehicle Restraint System (Safety Harnesses).

See our Training Tips at the bottom of this page

NOTE:  If you are using the PetStep II & HalfStep II for the back door of a standard four door sedan, the back door may not open wide enough to accommodate our 17" wide ramp. The back doors generally will not open fully such as a front door, which will open wide enough to accommodate our ramps. Before ordering one of our ramps for back door entrance of your four door sedan, we suggest you measure the opening to determine if the back door will open wide enough. Of course the front door entrance is an option for you.

SPECIAL SAFETY NOTE for Using the PetStep II:
In addition to you using your seat belt -- BOTH your pet and the PetStep II should be secured in your vehicle. This provides safety to both you and your pet. It keeps the PetStep II from becoming a missile to you or your pet inside the car in case of a quick stop, an accident or a rollover. Check out our Safety Harnesses for your pet.

All PetStep Ramps are shipped via UPS Ground only. The Roadie Ruff Rider Safety Harnesses are shipped via UPS only.

SPECIAL NOTE:  At this time Ruff Rider plans on only carrying their new Elite Model - which is an upgrade of the Basic Model. They will be discontinuing the Basic, LX and Geriatric Models.

However, while the discontinued models are available, I will offer them on my website. They are first-come, first-serve, so if you order and I find they are out, I will refund your money (see below).

It's here!! Our newest model - the Roadie Elite* - which is black with red Neoprene lining, like all Roadies - is tested to US human seatbelt standards. Researched and independently tested, Ruff Rider's Roadie Canine Vehicle Safety/Training Harness keeps the dog you love safe while riding, braking or turning and affords the best protection in extreme situations. It easily attaches to any vehicle\'s seatbelt system. It includes a built-in short walking lead for all-around use. Every Ruff Rider Roadie is vet approved & exceeds S.A.E. tensile strength standards for human seat belts.
*Runs a bit larger than the basic.

Even a low speed collision creates tremendous force, keeping your pet properly restrained prevents injury to your animal friend plus the rest of your friends and family in your vehicle.

For the best protection Ruff Rider recommends that children and dogs be seated in the back seats and all passengers (including the family dog) be buckled into the seat belts securely. Ruff Rider also offers options to restrain dogs where there are no seat belts available.

Please continue down this page to see how to measure your dog and the sizes available.
Ruff Rider Vehicle Restraint System - new Elite Model (upgrade from Basic)

How to Measure Circumference:
To get the RIB CAGE CIRCUMFERENCE measure your dog around the LARGEST part of his/her rib cage just behind the front legs while your dog is standing. Make this measurement SNUG, and be sure you can fit one finger under the measuring tape not two.

Puppies need to be sized just like full grown dogs. We do not recommend that you buy a size larger for your puppy so that they will "grow into it". If the harness is too big it will fall off.
Ask about our Puppy Program at travelsolutionspet@prodigy.net

However, while the discontinued models are available, I will offer them on my website. They are first-come, first-serve, so if you order and I find they are out, I will refund your money.

Keep in mind the "2-Finger Rule", as follows:
You should be able to insert between 2 and 4 fingers vertically between the bottom of the harness (where lead attaches to harness body) and the dog's back - less than 2 fingers - too small - more than 4 fingers, too big.

To get the RIB CAGE CIRCUMFERENCE measure your dog around the LARGEST part of his/her rib cage just behind the front legs while your dog is standing. Make this measurement SNUG, and be sure you can fit one finger under the measuring tape not two.

This harness is fleece-lined, so it's good to make a note that if the dog is too close to the larger possible size, it may not fit because of the amount of padding in it. For example: if dog is 39.5", a size 9 would be best way to go.

Geriatric Model - $25.00 + $10 S&H
Sizes still available are listed by Rib Cage Circumference & then by pounds
Size 1 - 12-13 in.  (6-10 lbs)
Size 3 - 17-21 in.  (15-20 lbs)
Size 4 - 22-24 in.  (21-30 lbs)
Size 8 - 36-40 in.  (96-130 lbs)
This model is very different from the others as it is designed for elderly dogs with limited mobility and has more buckles, etc. Not recommended unless you really have a need for it.

Safety Notes from PetStep:

Airbag Inflation Risk for Pets: Ruff Rider cites imminent danger for pets riding in the front seat

(Boulder, CO - February 21, 2001) - Ruff Rider Products advises pet owners about the dangers of placing dog's in the front seat of vehicles with airbags. Ruff Rider states, "A dog's head is too low and may be as much as 15 inches closer to the dashboard than a human's when seated in the front passenger position. This is extremely dangerous because airbags deploy from the dashboard at approximately 200 mph." Edward Jetter, Safety Standards Engineer at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, agrees that if a passenger is hit by an airbag before it is fully inflated, the passenger may sustain serious injury or even death.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that passengers' sit at least 12 inches away from the dashboard. National Statistics show that airbags may help prevent fatality by as much as 35% when used correctly. However, there were a significant amount of incidents in which some passengers were seriously or fatally injured after being seated in close proximity to a deploying airbag. Ruff Rider states, "Airbags were not designed for dogs or children. Airbags are designed for adult humans."

Toni Howell of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety agrees that airbags are not safe for pets riding in the front seat, but concludes that they do not have any information or statistics on pets in vehicles. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration also lacks statistics on how many pets are injured in car accidents each year.

Why dogs and passengers are NOT safe when you have the dog in a crate:

A crash test done by a German insurance company shows debris flying freely in the test car after the dog crate exploded on impact. The crate was fastened securely in the vehicle with the seatbelt. The crate exploded because the "dummy dog" hit the inside of the crate with incredible force. Remember that any loose object in the car is a potential missile. The real question here should be "Is anyone safe in the car with a crate?"

Designed with the help of veternary orthopedic surgeon Joe Evans DVM, the Roadie is orthopedically sound, ergonomically correct, and warranteed for the life of your animal. Made in Denver, CO, USA

Researched and independently tested, Ruff Rider's Roadie Canine Vehicle Safety/Training Harness keeps the dog you love safe while riding, braking or turning and affords the best protection in extreme situations. It easily attaches to any vehicle's seatbelt system. It includes a built-in short walking lead for all-around use. Training Tips for Using the PetStep Ramps
TRAINING TIPSfor Using the PetStep II and the HalfStep II Multi-Purpose Ramps

Some dogs will take to the PetSTEP II and HalfStep II immediately. For those that don't, we suggest you put the ramp flat on the ground & walk your dog over it (a reward placed on the ramp also helps or you might try feeding him (her) on the ramp once or twice). When you raise the ramp, your pets' favorite treat placed towards the top of the ramp also works the first time.

The first time up the ramp, take your dog by the collar & lead him to the reward. You'll only need to do this once or twice.

It is important to take your dog for a ride after he has successfully entered the vehicle - no dog likes to be teased about going for a ride!!!

And don't forget to safely secure your PetStep II and to safely secure your dogs with our Ruff Rider Roadie Vehicle Restraint System!!
